Legislation

Take a look at the some of the legislative efforts Alderman Sigcho-Lopez has done over the last year in City Council. Alderman Sigcho-Lopez always welcomes feedback on policy priorities, to submit your input please email Ward25@cityofchicago.org

    • Advocated for the Bring Chicago Home campaign to call for the city to increase the tax rate buyers pay on property sales over $1 million and have additional funds raised dedicated to providing permanent affordable housing and wraparound services for unhoused Chicagoans and fully supports the introduction of the Bring Chicago Home ordinance to include it on a public referendum during the March 2024 primaries.
    • Lead the call for an investigation on legality of recent Cook County property tax increases and utilization of tax increment financing (TIF) funds for homeowners at risk of foreclosure or scavenger tax sale.
    • Supported the amendment of Municipal Code Section 14X-8-803.2 by requiring senior housing complexes and other large (more than 100 units) apartment buildings to soon provide air-conditioned cooling centers as well as require permanent air conditioning in all newly constructed daycare centers, pre-K through 12th grade schools, and residential building projects.
    • Stood alongside the Little Village Discount Vendors to develop solutions and alternative locations for those small businesses that were being displaced.
    • Sponsored and passed the legislation to reduce the burden on small businesses by reducing the application fees for Special Use zoning applications for businesses with less than 100 employees.
  • Introduced into City Council a resolution to call on the Illinois General Assembly to rescind state-wide preempting of rent control laws due to the fact that the rate at which rents have increased in Chicago has continued to outpace the increase in Chicagoans’ real wages and resulted in an increasing rent burden borne by Chicago households.
  •
  • Sponsored the resolution to hold a hearing on the rate increases by Peoples Gas filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission and the subsequent impact on Chicagons.
  • Backed the amendment of the Municipal Code Section 2-120-518 which establishes an avenue of reporting and tracking procedures in regards to “hate incidents” as a way to monitor the data before they escalate into crimes.

  • Co-sponsored the Peacebook Ordinance to establish Neighborhood and City-Wide Peace Commissions aimed at promoting wraparound services and job opportunities with the purpose of reducing youth incarceration and violence.
  • Advocated for Illinois lawmakers to pass House Bill 2 and Senate Bill 78 allowing community-based organizations and healthcare providers to operate overdose prevention sites

  • In the midst of overturning Roe v Wade, Alder signed on to express support for the protection and expansion of abortion rights especially in states where abortion was made illegal or extremely restricted.
  • Worked with local environmental justice groups to have the Chicago  Department of Public Health review the SIMS Metal application with a cumulative impact study report as there has been a long history of pollution and environmental racism leading to numerous documented negative health outcomes in these communities.
  •
  • Voted in favor of the proposal to phase out the City’s subminimum wage for tipped workers over a five-year period, known as the One Fair Wage ordinance.
  • Fought for the efforts of unionization for Starbucks Workers through a demonstration outside a Starbucks coffee shop in Logan Square at Boulevard and California, calling on the City Council to approve a resolution supporting the Starbucks workers’ right to unionize.
  • Supported the non-nurses workers at Howard Brown Health in their work to form a union to guarantee competitive pay and benefits, employment of sufficient staff, and adequate COVID safety protocols to protect workers and patients.
